Technology Tips for Differentiated Instruction

Because it knocks down classroom walls, expands the boundaries of our knowledge base almost to infinity, and allows us to produce in ways thought unattainable even 15 years ago, technology is changing the way teachers teach and students learn.

This theme focuses on essential topics and issues associated with teaching and learning with technology, and offers resources for both teachers and students.

Resources

	CISCO Networking Academy Program
	This program is a partnership between Cisco Systems, education, business, government, and community organizations worldwide. To prepare students for the 21st Century workplace, its curriculum centers around teaching students to design, build, and maintain computer networks.

	Edutopia: Success Stories for the Digital Age
	This publication offers a glimpse of innovative educators who are using technology to connect with students, colleagues, the local community, and the world. This resource contains photos, useful books, web sites, and organizations.

	GLOBE Program
	GLOBE is a worldwide, hands-on, primary and secondary school-based science and education program.

	History-Social Science Course Models
	The History-Social Science Course Models web site is designed to provide K-12 teachers with an easy way to implement the State of California's History/Social Science Standards in the classroom. It is divided into two sections. The first contains the History-Social Science content standards and annotated course model lessons. Anyone can access these materials, free of charge.

	Labor Secretary's Commission on Achieving Necessary Skills (SCANS)
	Findings and recommendations from a Secretary of Labor Commission appointed to determine skills young people need to succeed in the world of work.

Lesson Plan Builder

The Lesson Plan Builder will guide you step-by-step through the creation of a Lesson Plan that meets the California standards and automatically finds the best electronic learning resources for the Lesson. Once you have created a new Lesson Plan you can submit it to a Peer Editing Group to receive feedback from other users. The site also includes tools that can assist you in developing a quality Lesson Plan:

	Middle School Mathematics Through Applications Program
	This project is a comprehensive middle school curriculum developed at the Institute for Research on Learning and Stanford University. The curriculum is specially designed to meet today's mathematics and standards through engaging work-based projects.

	National Science Education Standards
	These standards outline what students need to know, understand, and be able to do to be scientifically literate at different grade levels.

NETS Online Technology Assessment

The NETS Online Technology Assessment helps teachers measure student skills in using software applications and helps measure student progress toward meeting the National Educational Technology Standards for Students (NETS•S). Each assessment consists of 5 to 10 activities measuring a number of separate skills as well as integrated sets of skills related to a project or problem. The assessments are designed to be completed within an average of 30 minutes or less, but they are not timed. Individual activities can be repeated, and the assessments can be retaken as many times as needed. Feedback on student performance is provided after each question, and a summary is given at the end.

	Online Professional Development Rubric
	The rubric presented here is in draft form and is intended to help you identify some of the questions to ask as you select online professional development.

	pblnet.org
	This very helpful website offers information, guidance, links, and lesson plans for implementing Project-Based Learning in 3-12 classrooms. All curricula are standards aligned and integrated across subject areas.

	Scoring Guide for Student Products
	The Scoring Guide for Student Products was created to evaluate the content knowledge and the effective use of technology in communicating ideas and information that is evident in the products that students create with computers. The Scoring Guide for Student Products is intended to be used as a scoring guide, not as a rubric.

	Teachers Domain
	Teachers Domain is a brand new digital library which offers "multimedia resources for the classroom and professional development." Access is free but you will need to complete a simple registration form. The site contains both multimedia content and lesson plans.

	The George Lucas Educational Foundation
	This nonprofit organization gathers and disseminates the most innovative models of K-12 teaching and learning in the digital age.

	Think.com
	This site uses the Internet to create a global learning community that connects students and teachers and contains tools that foster communication and collaboration in a structured and protected environment.

	Virtual Schools: Trends and Issues
	Reviews model K-12 approaches to online learning and includes a list of online student learning opportunities.
