Planning for Technology: putting the pieces together

This Toolkit offers practical help to teachers, administrators, and school and district planners as they implement instructional technology plans that promote more powerful student learning.
The TechPlan Toolkit provides rubrics, checklists, and other guides for planning technology implementation. Where appropriate, links are provided to other sites that offer models of best practice, example plans, and additional tools and resources to support a more informed technology planning program.

	Apple Learning Interchange's Exhibits
	This site exhibit area offers a range of technology- infused cross-curricular instructional units from Kindergarten through university/college levels. Each unit is thoroughly documented, including information about the lesson, alignment to standards, assessment, sample student work, resources, and more.

	Collaborative Evaluation Led by Local Educators
	This resource supports an interactive collaborative process within a school or district that engages a team of educators in assessing the effectiveness of a local program or initiative. 	Distance Learning Resource Network (DLRN)
	The dissemination project for the Star Schools Program, a federally funded distance education program which offers instructional modules, enrichment activities and courses in science, mathematics, foreign languages, workplace skills, high school completion and adult literacy programs.

Lesson Plan Builder

The Lesson Plan Builder will guide you step-by-step through the creation of a Lesson Plan that meets the California standards and automatically finds the best electronic learning resources for the Lesson. Once you have created a new Lesson Plan you can submit it to a Peer Editing Group to receive feedback from other users. The site also includes tools that can assist you in developing a quality Lesson Plan:

NETS Online Technology Assessment

The NETS Online Technology Assessment helps teachers measure student skills in using software applications and helps measure student progress toward meeting the National Educational Technology Standards for Students (NETS•S). Each assessment consists of 5 to 10 activities measuring a number of separate skills as well as integrated sets of skills related to a project or problem. The assessments are designed to be completed within an average of 30 minutes or less, but they are not timed. Individual activities can be repeated, and the assessments can be retaken as many times as needed. Feedback on student performance is provided after each question, and a summary is given at the end.

The Technology Planning Satellite Video Conference series is comprised of four modules, recorded as video on a two tape set:

Introduction to Technology Planning: Overview of the Essential Elements
This first session focuses on the essential elements of technology planning including: establishing a vision, involving all stakeholders in the process, planning for staff development, maintenance and support, identifying funding resources and planning for evaluation.
Classroom Practices: Integrating Technology with Instruction
From a one computer classroom to high levels of access, teachers will describe and demonstrate how they have incorporated technology into their regular instructional programs. How teachers use stand-alone software, hypermedia tools, scanners, digital cameras, camcorders and other tools will be discussed.
Technology Staff Development: Effective Practices
The critical element for effective use of technology by students and teachers is staff development. A carefully designed program will support teachers to move from learning about technology to using technology to support personal productivity to using technology to enhance student learning. This segment will examine successful staff training practices that districts and schools have developed to promote the use of technology as a tool for more powerful student learning.
Ongoing Support and Maintenance: School Planning and Technical Issues
Buying hardware and software and training staff are important first steps. Networking and ongoing support require planning and the allocation of financial resources. This final program in the series will examine the elements that must be in place to support the use of technology in schools and offices. Guidelines for network planning, network and technical support, maintenance, standards and acceptable use policies will be discussed.

The Putting the Pieces Together satellite series includes round table discussions with panelists highlighting the "keys to success" for technology planning and the steps to develop, fund, and implement a plan. Actual field examples are used to illustrate these steps and to allow viewers to observe the outcomes. This project is partially funded by the California Technology Assistance Project (CTAP) and with support from the Distance Learning Resource Network (DLRN) a dissemination project for the U.S. Department of Education Star Schools Program.
