FIND OUT WHAT WORKS The What Works Clearinghouse (WWC) gathers studies on the effectiveness of educational interventions (programs, products, practices, and policies). Studies that have the strongest design are reviewed. The WWC provides reports with a rating system in order to give a sense of how reliable the research study findings are. The WWC releases new reports on a monthly basis, so check back regularly. SchoolsMovingUp Given the immense pressure on districts and schools to raise student achievement in low-performing schools and the limited resources with which to do so, the need for relevant resources, cost-effective tools that guide the school reform process, and timely access to services and expertise is urgent. With SchoolsMovingUp, WestEd is using the Web to assist and share knowledge with school reform practitioners at both the district and school levels. SchoolsMovingUp is organized into five main areas - Assistance, Ideas in Action, Tools, Reading Room, Resources, and Events - and offers multiple ways for visitors to contact WestEd school improvement staff. COPYRIGHT AND DISTANCE LEARNING The North Carolina State University Libraries have developed the TEACH Toolkit to help teachers and students understand how recent changes in the law affect copyright issues and education, primarily with distance learning. This resource site includes an overview of TEACH and how it affects institutional users of copyright materials, a permissions guideline with various checklists, and an excellent copyright tutorial. GET ADOPTED Teachers who register at the Adopt-a-Classroom Web site can be adopted by an individual, a business, or a foundation. Once adopted, teachers will receive $500 worth of credit to purchase items that enrich the learning environment, including classroom technology. Every donor receives information about the classroom it has adopted, including an itemized list of what teachers bought so donors can see the impact of their donation. DIGITAL PHOTO CONTEST FOR KIDS Technology & Learning invites K-12 students to participate in the fourth annual digital photography contest. This year's theme, "My Personal Universe," encourages students to capture and share their own unique vision with the editors and readers of Technology & Learning. The subject of the photo is entirely up to each contestant. Photos may be submitted "as is" or can be manipulated using photo editing software. IMPROVING VOCABULARY AND GRAMMAR SKILLS Activities for ESL Students is a Web site that has a wonderful selection of vocabulary and grammar quizzes, exercises, and puzzles. The Flash Quizzes for English Study offer great quizzes for anyone interested in improving their language skills (requires the Flash Player plug-in, version 4 or newer). GETTING TO KNOW GOVERNMENT Project Vote Smart provides easy access to information on the United States Congress, including Key Votes, Recent Votes, a Status of Appropriation Chart, Other Congressional Resources and Week at a Glance which details major actions that have taken place on the floor of Congress. Do you have questions about Voter Registration? Check out the Voter Registration section of the PVS website. Information can be found on the Deadline to Register, the Qualifications, where you can get a Voter Registration Form, and Absentee Ballot information for every state. FREE RESOURCES FOR EDUCATORS The textbook, Education for an Information Age: Teaching in the Computerized Classroom, 5th ed., is now available online. It includes links to tutorials for Microsoft Office 2000 and Office XP. Tutorials for Office 2003 are in preparation and will be freely available online by the end of August 2004. An extensive set of Web Resources for teachers and students, including indexed links to several thousand Web sites useful in K-12 education is also provided. MAGAZINE ARCHIVE National Geographic has provided access to electronic copies of their magazine at this Web site. Magazines with publication dates from 1996 to the present are available at this comprehensive archive page. Each issue includes a streaming video feature based on one of the monthly articles. FREE LANGUAGE RESOURCESbr> SEIR*TEC (SouthEast Initiatives Regional Technology in Education Consortium) and the ITRC (Instructional Technology Resource Center at UCF) have added a few new items to their eStore. In cooperation with the National Center on Adult Literacy (NCAL), SEIR*TEC and the ITRC are offering two tip cards that list Web sites for parents or other caregivers who want to improve their own English language skills.
