The Internet allows students and teachers to find pictures of almost anything. These can be copied and pasted into worksheets for printing, into PowerPoint slide shows, and into student reports.

One teacher visited the online version of her school's science text and copied a graph from the text book into a test she was designing for students, so that she could ask questions about how they interpreted the data in the graph.

While some of the image collections state "public domain" or unrestricted use for educational purposes, there are copyright issues with using just any image from the Internet.
One time use for a classroom or by a student should be permissible under the Copyright Act of 1976, which states that reproduction for noncommercial "purposes such as criticism, comments, teaching . . . scholarship, or research, is not an infringement of copyright." You should not use someone  else's images for your website, for something that is printed for distribution, or in any way that involves sales, without permission,

Free and Easy Image Sources

Google has an image search engine that is fast and easy.

The AccuNet/AP Multimedia Archive provides a sensory journey of photographs, audio sound bites, graphics and text spanning over 160 years of history. Visually stimulating images are correlated with State Learning Standards as well as the National Standards by grade level for in subjects such as history, geography, and science. Educators qualify for a free trial account.

Microsoft has a large free clip art library.

Botanical Society of America Online Image Collection features cells, pollen and plants.

National Park Geology Image Sources includes glaciers, erosional landforms, volcanoes, weather, and park shots.

Teacher Files features a collection of public domain clip art.

Discovery School has a collection of unique illustrations sorted by topic.

The Teacher's Guide has an annotated listing of educational clip art sites.

Free Digital Photos has a searchable collection of high quality stock photos.


Free and Easy Creativity Software

Comic Life (Mac shareware) provides comic templates, choices of speech balloons, comic lettering, and captions. This inspiring piece of software also links to your iPhoto library.
